System health + native desktop

Vitalis

A native Rust dashboard for the COSMIC desktop that turns CPU, GPU, memory, storage, thermal, and health signals into one readable local view.

The project

Know what the machine is doing.

Vitalis is a focused system-health dashboard for COSMIC. It collects the signals that usually live in separate commands and status panels, then gives them a consistent surface for overview, drill-down, alerts, and short-term history.

The dashboard covers per-core CPU usage, frequency and temperature, NVIDIA monitoring through NVML, AMD readings through sysfs, memory and process pressure, storage and SMART health, fan speeds, and additional thermal sensors. Proton and Wine processes are visible in the resource views instead of disappearing behind the desktop.

  • Overview cards for CPU, GPU, RAM, storage, system, and health
  • Per-core CPU, GPU, memory, drive, and thermal drill-downs
  • NVIDIA NVML support with AMD sysfs fallback
  • SMART drive data, fan speeds, and thermal-throttle detection
  • Composite health score with component breakdown
  • Alert history and JSON snapshot export for diagnostics
  • Ten-minute rolling history ready for graph views
Current state

Development project for COSMIC-based Linux desktops. Hardware providers and privileged sensor tooling vary by machine, so Vitalis presents platform-specific evidence rather than pretending every reading has the same reliability everywhere.
